At KMS Art and Music play a very important part of our curriculum and extra curriculum activities. Art and Performing Arts is offered in the school up to A Level and pupils have the opportunity for Drama and Creative Writing in our TEAM KMS lessons throughout the whole school.
Music plays a really important part of our school culture with primary and secondary choir meeting every week and showcasing their talents in our school productions and events. For our very talented singers we have a Chamber Choir, which runs at both primary and secondary level and these pupils have performed at Hoddington Hall, Welsh Millennium Centre.
Music is an integral part of our curriculum from the age of 3. Pupils are encouraged to try different instruments and are taught flute, piano, drums and composition through the use of iMacs. Music lessons run throughout the school all day and through to the evening, with Saturday lessons being very popular for pupils so they don’t miss curriculum time. Music Theory lessons are available Friday evenings.
In our Primary School we have developed Talk4Writing, a creative and visual learning and teaching method to develop our pupils creative writing skills. All of our pupils have their short stories published every year and our partners, International Music School (IMS), then choose their favourite story and, working with the author, turn it into our school musical which the pupils then act in.
As well as our curriculum provision, drama is available for our pupils after school on a Monday with our partner, Shelley Norton from the Tramshed. Pupils have the opportunity to take part in our annual play, which is staged at either the Gate House or the Sherman Theatre and we have staged a number of plays including:
• Into the Woods
• We Will Rock You
If our pupils are not the performing type we offer Music Technology to train and develop our Sound Engineers; Stage Hands; Directors etc as part of our curriculum at Key Stage 4 to ensure these productions are truly a pupil affair.
KMS has an excellent reputation for our Art, being commissioned by RMHC to provide over 38 pieces to adorn their new hours in Heath Hospital, Cardiff, from paintings for each room to a 5 foot sculpted dragon! Pupils regularly attend life drawing workshops and we work with renowned artist Aiden Myers in supporting pupils work and creative ideas. We also work with Craft At Heart, offering Powertex workshops to our pupils to enhance their pieces.
