At Kings Monkton School we believe that regular exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Study after study shows the benefits it can have. Not only does regular exercise help us manage our weight and reduce your risk of developing diseases, it can help prevent and treat mental health problems. It can boost our wellbeing and mood, and is a great way to unwind from the stresses of life.

Off Site Activities:

As such, at KMS we utilise the best opportunities offered to us by being based in the centre of Cardiff. For an afternoon each week our pupils are taken off site in our minibuses to the best facilities Cardiff has to offer to develop a passion for exercise and sport.

We offer a range of activities as part of our games sessions, including:

Boulders – pupils develop excellent team work skills and resilience as they learn to climb and push themselves to different challenges

White Water Rafting – pupils learn the importance of team work as they work together to navigate the white waters of Cardiff’s International White Water Rafting course.

Cross Fit – pupil learn the improtance of cardiovascular work out as they psh themselves towards their individual goals.

Pedal Power – developing bicycle skills and touring the Taff Trail develops a healthy lifestyle in our pupils, as well as balance skills and resilience.

We also offer the more traditional sports so that pupils can grow in confidence and ability in a range of areas.
These take place in the excellent facilities of Cardiff University or the University of South Wales:

  • Football
  • Netball
  • Rugby
  • Hockey
  • Tennis
  • Badminton
  • Weight training
  • Athletics
  • Cross Country

On Site Activities:

As well as our afternoon of games, pupils throughout the school also get an hour of Physical Education, based on site in our purpose built gym or main hall. During this time pupils are taught a wide range of skills, including:

  • Gym fitness and bleep tests
  • Table Tennis
  • Gymnastics
  • Circuits
  • Dodge Ball

Healthy Lifestyle

However, wellbeing and fitness is not just about sports, it is also about learning to live a healthy lifestyle. As the school moves towards the Silver Healthy Schools Award, we work with pupils throughout our curriculum to teach them the importance of healthy lifestyles; friendship groups and relationships. All pupils are allocated a Pastoral Tutor, who looks after their pastoral needs, and an Academic Tutor, who mentors them in their academic work and target grades. At Kings Monkton School we believe that all pupils have the capacity to learn and grow and it is our responsibility to support them in becoming the best they can be.

This is supported by our Wellbeing Staff:

Cooking Lessons

It is also important that pupils learn how to stay healthy on the inside, as well as physically and mentally. As such, at Kings Monkton School we teach cooking to all our primary children from Year 1 upwards, starting with the basics such as knife skills, baking and healthy diets to hour lessons every week at Key Stage 3 to ensure pupils develop culinary awareness of a range of dishes and cooking techniques, from soups to bolognaise, from bread making to cake decoration. Pupils then can take their interests further and study Hospitality and Catering up to GCSE. At Sixth Form, we teach all the pupils how to cook healthily on a budget so our children are not just relying on pot noodle and toast in university!
