Kings Monkton School is a mainstream school that prides itself on its inclusive nature. We do not have an entrance examination as our belief and experience shows us that once children feel safe, secure, and happy they will excel in education.
We welcome input from specialist agencies for our statemented pupils and pupils with IDP’s as well as having in-house support. Our ALN team is led by our experienced ALNCo, Mrs Strange.
Mrs Strange has worked at Kings Monkton for 11 years, recently achieving her Master’s degree in ALN with an Autism and behaviour analysis focus. Mrs Strange is our specialist in Autism.
Kings Monkton can provide an education for pupils within the following areas of ALN:
Communication and interaction such as autism
As there is no delegated ALN budget from local authorities in independent schools, any support that a pupil requires in order to access our curriculum, must be funded by parents or the local authority. With the new ALNET Act now in force, the use of IDP’s are being structured for implementation. As an independent school, we sit outside of all Local Authority’s’ direction, therefore, all IDP’s remain the responsibility of the Local Authority in which you reside. As an independent school we cannot produce IDP’s.
At Kings Monkton we operate a graduated response to pupils needs.
Wave One:
The ALNCos advise and support teaching staff to ensure that classrooms are inclusive for all pupils. Teachers are responsible for appropriate differentiation of work through our 1 to 3 star system.
Wave Two:
If a pupil is not meeting expected targets within the classroom, then a teacher or parent may make a referral to the ALN team. The ALNCos will co-ordinate appropriate short term catch-up interventions to improve literacy, numeracy, social or emotional skills. These interventions will last for up to a term. If no progress is shown, then we may suggest the services of other agencies or specialists. A cognitive assessment by an Educational Psychologist may be advised.
Wave Three:
When a pupil has been assessed and school has received input, advice or recommendations from external agencies (EP, SALT, OT), a school based long term provision plan will be put in place to monitor progress of recommendations that have been made and the pupil will be placed on our ‘additional learning provision’ register. Pupils with a current Statement of Educational Needs or a Local Authority Maintained IDP that require long term literacy, numeracy, social, emotional or any other interventions will be overseen by the ALNCos. These pupils will be placed on the school’s ALN register and an IDP will be written in conjunction with the ALNCo’s but maintained by the Local Authority.
