Life in Secondary School

These years are a pivotal time in a child’s education; pupils are asked to make choices on their GCSE subjects and begin to shape their future academic and career paths. We can offer our pupils a wide range of GCSE options so they can tailor their learning experience to their interests and passions. This includes sciences, humanities and languages, and we also encourage sporting and musical excellence in our learners and support them to achieve their full potential.

GCSEs can be challenging years for pupils; our school ethos is to always support our pupils in their learning as well as their wellbeing, but also push them to achieve their best. We support their learning through regular teaching and learning, and online virtual learning enables pupils to get the best out of their homework and a constant dialogue with parents about how their child is progressing. Every pupil in Years 10 and 11 will also be offered a choice of clubs and will study the core subjects along with their option choices made at the end of Key Stage 3.

Year 11 is probably the most demanding year of GCSEs, where big choices have to be made and exams need to be thoroughly revised for. We promote the idea of preparing pupils for all aspects of life and encourage a mature and responsible attitude by assigning prefect duties. At the end of Year 11, whether our pupils are going to sixth form, college, or employment, they will always have access to our expert guidance, advice and help in crafting personal statements and choosing subjects that are right for them.

Key Stage 3 - Years 7 to 9

We pride ourselves on making the transition from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3 as smooth and easy as possible for our pupils. To make this possible, all pupils from Years 7 to 9 have a dedicated form tutor who will work closely with the Head of Pastoral Care and the Senior Leadership Team to monitor and review the progress of each pupil under their care.

Every pupil in Years 7 to 9 will also be offered a choice of clubs and study a range of subjects and languages. We also offer PHSE lessons that are supported by the work of the Form Tutor.

Each child is encouraged and empowered to participate in the life and community aspect of Kings Monkton and to be the best they can be, whether on the sporting field, playing an instrument, raising money for charity, or enhancing the school assemblies with topical presentations and dramatisations.
